Breezy Johnson Wins Gold After Injury Nearly Ended Her Career

Breezy Johnson flew down the Cortina d'Ampezzo slope at 80 miles per hour Sunday, finishing just four hundredths of a second ahead of Germany's Emma Aicher to win Olympic gold. The victory was especially sweet because it happened on the very same course where her career nearly ended four years ago.

The 30-year-old from Idaho had already torn her ACL in early 2022 when she attempted to train at Cortina anyway. She crashed again during that training run, dislodging cartilage in what she called "a massive crack." The injuries kept her out of the 2022 Beijing Olympics entirely.

Johnson's road back to the top of the podium wasn't easy. In 2023, she received a 14-month suspension after missing three drug tests, though she maintained the missed tests were communication errors and all her actual drug tests came back clean.

She returned to competition in December 2024 and quickly regained her form. By the 2025 World Championships, she had already claimed another gold medal in downhill.

Sunday's race showcased the aggressive, risk-taking style that defines downhill skiing. Snow flew from Johnson's skis as she pushed the limits, sometimes veering outside the blue lines. Each interval showed her gaining more time, and she crossed the finish line in 1:36.10, wearing a red, white and blue headband she'd knitted the night before as part of her race day tradition.

"If you're going through hell, you keep walking because you don't want to just sit around in hell," Johnson told reporters after her win. "And sometimes when you keep going, maybe you'll make it back to the top."

Johnson's journey proves that setbacks don't have to be endpoints. Her story resonates because it's messy and real, filled with the kind of obstacles that would have ended many careers. Instead of letting injuries, suspensions, and doubts define her, she kept training and believing in herself.

The victory is also historic as Team USA's first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Johnson still has two more chances to compete this week in the team combined event on Tuesday and the super-G on Thursday.
