Britain Hits 98.8% Zero-Carbon Electricity in One Hour

Great Britain just proved that a clean energy future isn't some distant dream. On Wednesday afternoon, April 22nd, the national grid powered the country on 98.8% zero-carbon electricity for a full half hour.

Between 3:30pm and 4:00pm, wind turbines and nuclear plants did the heavy lifting. Wind energy provided half of all electricity while nuclear contributed another 34%. Gas, which once dominated British power, supplied just 1.2% during this record-breaking window.

The National Energy System Operator announced the achievement on Thursday, calling it proof that Britain's electricity system can run safely on homegrown renewables. This marks the second time in April that Britain has set zero-carbon records. Earlier in the month, solar generation hit consecutive daily records on April 6th and 7th. The grid is getting cleaner, and it's happening fast.
