Britain Shatters Solar Record With 14.4% Clean Energy

Britain's solar panels just had their best month ever, delivering more clean electricity to the grid than any time in history.

Solar energy supplied 14.4% of all power generated in July, smashing the previous record of 12.4% set just two months earlier. That's a huge jump from last July's 9.6%, when Britain was already celebrating its best solar year on record.

The breakthrough means solar panels across the country generated 3.2 terawatt hours of electricity in a single month. To put that in perspective, on one particularly sunny Sunday, solar provided nearly 45% of Britain's power at midday.

What's driving this surge? Homeowners are going solar in record numbers. The first half of this year saw 142,536 new installations, the most since government subsidies ended in 2019. Most are rooftop panels on family homes, where solar cuts energy bills dramatically.

The trend reflects a simple reality: solar has become affordable. Without subsidies, people are choosing it anyway because it makes financial sense. Add uncounted commercial installations on supermarkets and warehouses, and the real number is even higher.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks pointed to the bigger picture. After two fossil fuel crises in five years, homegrown renewable power protects families from global price shocks. More solar means more energy security and lower bills for everyone.

The Ripple Effect

The transformation happened remarkably fast. Just 15 years ago, solar was barely a footnote in Britain's energy mix, holding only 1% of renewable capacity. Today it accounts for over a third, and renewables overall now generate 60% of the country's electricity—up from just 3% in 2000.

The economic impact ripples through communities nationwide. The solar and battery storage sectors generated £1.9 billion for Britain's economy in 2024 while employing 20,000 people. By 2035, industry estimates predict £3.5 billion in annual economic value and 43,000 jobs.

Britain isn't just meeting climate goals—it's building an industry. Every rooftop panel installed represents a family taking control of their energy costs. Every percentage point of solar capacity means less dependence on imported fuel and volatile global markets.
