British Couple Fosters 59 Dogs Over 15 Years

While most retirees fill their golden years with golf or gardening, Nicole and Gary Wordsworth chose something messier and infinitely more rewarding. Over the past 15 years, the British couple has fostered 59 dogs from Battersea Dogs Home in Buckinghamshire, giving shelter animals a peaceful home to decompress before adoption.

The journey started in 2011 when the couple, then working from home, saw an ad for dog sponsorship. After years of pet-sitting for friends, they met with Battersea and welcomed their first foster, a little Staffie named Marcel.

Since then, their home has housed everyone from Siberian huskies to American bulldogs. Some pups stay just a few nights, while others nestle in for up to 18 months. Each one gets the space and time they need to shed their kennel stress and let their true personality shine.

"We love to help get them out of the kennels when they are too stressed and need a quiet spot to perch," Nicole explains. The couple doesn't struggle with goodbyes because they know each temporary resident is moving toward something better.

Their fostering work does more than provide temporary shelter. The Wordsworths observe crucial details that help adoption staff make perfect matches: which toys spark joy, preferred dinner times, ideal walk distances, and sleep patterns. These insights ensure each dog lands in the right forever home.

One of their most memorable fosters was a massive American bulldog who learned to shake paws and follow commands during his stay. His story got an extra happy twist when his original owner spotted him on the adoption website and brought him home.

Their most recent guest, Stormy the husky, stayed for four months and charmed them with her signature "happy food dance," bouncing from paw to paw while her meals were prepared. She loved sofa snuggles and had a permanently smiley face that made every day brighter.

Gary insists picking a favorite is impossible, though some dogs stick in their memories more than others. "They all have characters though, and it's great to see all their nerves dissipating, and their actual personality coming out to shine."

The couple wants other retirees to know fostering isn't as daunting as it seems. Battersea provides training, covers all expenses, and starts new fosters with easier dogs. If a particular pup feels too challenging, fosters can simply say so without pressure.

Now in their 60s and fully retired, the Wordsworths have no plans to stop. They've learned the beautiful truth that there really is a perfect dog for everyone, and they get to be part of 59 happy ending stories.
