Buffalo families receiving career coaching and financial literacy support through county poverty reduction program

Buffalo Invests $12.5M to Lift 600 Families From Poverty

✨ Faith Restored

Erie County just launched a $12.5 million program that will help 600 Buffalo families escape poverty through job training, cash incentives, and financial coaching. Families can earn up to $16,000 while building skills for lasting economic stability.

Six hundred families in Buffalo are about to get a real shot at building a better future, thanks to a $12.5 million investment that puts money and support directly where it's needed most.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced the new poverty reduction initiative on January 29, partnering with the Community Action Organization of Western New York to help families increase their earnings and gain valuable job skills. The program focuses on families with children living in poverty within the City of Buffalo.

Here's what makes this different from typical assistance programs. Families don't just receive help. They receive cash incentives tied to real progress toward their goals.

Each participating family can earn up to $16,000 through 29 separate payments as they hit milestones like completing coaching sessions, enrolling in training programs, and landing jobs. The money comes as they make genuine strides toward financial independence.

The program includes life and career coaching to help families identify their strengths and set achievable goals. Financial literacy services teach practical money management skills that last a lifetime.

Around 125 participants will get help obtaining driver's licenses, removing a major barrier to employment for many low-income workers. Getting to work reliably often means the difference between keeping a job and losing it.

Ten families will benefit from an Automotive Matching Program that turns their savings into real mobility. For every dollar a participant saves, the program adds six more, up to $6,000, toward buying a vehicle. That's potentially $7,000 toward reliable transportation.

The Ripple Effect

When families gain economic stability, entire communities benefit. Children perform better in school when their parents aren't constantly stressed about money. Neighborhoods strengthen when more residents have steady employment.

Dr. Marie A. Cannon, president and CEO of the Community Action Organization of WNY, sees this as more than temporary relief. The program provides economic mobility through upskilling, workforce development, and ongoing coaching support.

New York State Commissioner Barbara C. Guinn emphasized that investing in low-income families creates lasting change. Better family well-being leads to improved school performance and stronger economic security for entire communities.

The initiative also connects families to subsidized job placements, on-the-job training, industry-specific career pathways, and pre-apprenticeships. These aren't dead-end positions but genuine opportunities to build careers.

Six hundred families are getting more than financial assistance—they're getting a roadmap out of poverty and the support to follow it all the way through.
