BYD EVs Charge to 70% in 5 Minutes, Even in Extreme Cold

Imagine pulling into a charging station and leaving five minutes later with enough battery to drive for hours.

BYD, one of the world's largest electric vehicle makers, just made that a reality. The company is rolling out its Flash Charging technology to more vehicle models, starting with the popular Yuan Plus SUV.

The numbers sound almost too good to be true. BYD's new Blade Battery 2.0 system can charge a vehicle from 10% to 70% in about five minutes. A full charge from 10% to 97% takes around nine minutes.

What makes this even more impressive is how it handles cold weather. Most electric car owners know batteries charge slower when temperatures drop, but BYD claims its system adds only three extra minutes in minus-22-degree Fahrenheit conditions.

The company first introduced this technology in premium vehicles like the Yangwang U7 and Denza Z9 GT. Now it's bringing the same capability to the Yuan Plus, one of its bestselling models with ranges up to 391 miles.

BYD is already taking orders for the Denza Z9 GT in Europe, where the company plans to introduce what it calls "Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3" charging to drivers outside China.

The Ripple Effect

Faster charging could transform electric vehicle adoption worldwide. Apartment dwellers who can't install home chargers, road trippers planning long journeys, and anyone hesitant about switching from gas-powered cars suddenly have one less reason to worry.

Cleaner transportation becomes more practical when it fits seamlessly into people's lives. Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe pollution, which means cleaner air in cities and a step forward in addressing rising global temperatures.

BYD's strategy of starting with luxury models before scaling to mass-market vehicles suggests ultra-fast charging won't stay exclusive to high-end buyers. As the technology reaches more affordable models, millions of drivers could benefit.

The move also puts pressure on other automakers to match these charging speeds or risk falling behind in a rapidly evolving market.

If these charging times hold up in everyday use across different climates and conditions, BYD may have just removed one of the last major barriers keeping people from going electric.
