BYD Exports 120K EVs in March as Gas Prices Fuel Demand
Chinese automaker BYD just shipped 120,000 electric vehicles overseas in March, a 65% jump from last year, as rising gas prices push drivers worldwide toward cleaner alternatives. Even Thailand's Prime Minister now drives a BYD electric SUV.
While gas prices surge across the globe, one Chinese automaker is seeing unprecedented demand for its electric vehicles in markets that once hesitated to make the switch.
BYD exported 120,083 electric and hybrid vehicles in March 2026, marking a massive 65% increase from the same month last year. The company has already moved 321,165 vehicles overseas in just the first three months of this year.
The timing couldn't be better. Rising tensions in the Middle East have sent oil and gas prices climbing, and drivers are responding by trading their gas guzzlers for electric alternatives.
In Manila, one BYD dealership booked an entire month's worth of orders in just two weeks. "Clients are replacing units in favor of EVs because of the oil price hikes," says Dominique Poh, a salesman at the dealership.
Thailand is seeing the same trend. The country's Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, was spotted arriving at the government house this week in his personal BYD Sealion 07 electric SUV.

Industry officials are taking notice. "We were previously less upbeat about EV demand in 2026," admits Surapong Paisitpatnapong from Thailand's automobile industry group. "If oil prices stay at current levels or rise further, we expect a significant increase in EV demand."
BYD told analysts this week it's "highly confident" it will hit 1.5 million overseas sales by the end of 2026. That's 200,000 more vehicles than the company predicted just two months ago.
The Ripple Effect
What started as a domestic success story is becoming a global climate solution. Markets outside China now account for 40% of BYD's total sales, and the company believes that number could hit 50% within weeks.
The shift is happening across Southeast Asia, Europe, Central America, and South America. Each new electric vehicle on the road means less carbon in the atmosphere and fewer drivers vulnerable to volatile oil markets.
BYD's newest technology, including its Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging systems, is just starting to reach international markets. The company expects demand to accelerate even faster as drivers discover they can charge vehicles in minutes instead of hours.
Rising gas prices are painful, but they're helping millions of people worldwide make a switch that benefits both their wallets and the planet.
