BYD Factory Hits 100K EVs, Creates 5,500 Jobs in Brazil

A city that had stopped believing in new opportunities is dreaming again, thanks to an electric vehicle boom that's creating thousands of jobs in northeastern Brazil.

BYD, the Chinese electric carmaker, just hit a major milestone at its Brazilian factory in Camaçari, Bahia. After only nine months of operations, the plant has produced over 100,000 vehicles and now directly employs 5,500 local workers.

The numbers tell a story of remarkable speed. BYD reached 1,000 employees just 60 days after opening. Six months later, that number tripled to 3,000 workers.

Today, 86% of the workforce comes from Bahia state, and more than half are Camaçari residents. The company is prioritizing local hiring and creating career paths in a region hungry for opportunity.

Ednei dos Santos Silva, the factory's 5,500th employee, was unemployed when BYD arrived. "For a long time, the local industrial sector had lost momentum, and many people no longer believed that new opportunities would emerge here," said the production operator, who now works in the welding shop.

The factory produces three models, including the Dolphin Mini, which became Brazil's best-selling battery electric vehicle for five consecutive months. Over 35,000 Dolphin Mini units have sold this year alone.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about one factory or one company. When an industrial hub loses its heartbeat, entire communities suffer. Families struggle, young people leave for opportunities elsewhere, and hope becomes scarce.

BYD's investment is reversing that trend in Camaçari. Workers are supporting families again, building careers, and planning futures in their hometown. The factory is positioning Bahia as a global hub for next-generation automotive manufacturing.

More than 300,000 Brazilians have now purchased BYD vehicles, embracing the electric future. The company is building momentum across Latin America as part of its global expansion beyond China.
