BYD Hits 16 Million Electric Vehicles Produced in China

Chinese automaker BYD just produced its 16 millionth electric vehicle at its Changsha plant, reaching a production milestone that would have seemed impossible just years ago. The historic vehicle was a second-generation DENZA D9, a luxury MPV packed with cutting-edge battery technology.

The new charging technology tackles two pain points that have held electric vehicles back: slow charging times and poor performance in cold weather. The latest DENZA D9 can add substantial range in just five minutes and fully charge in nine minutes. Even in brutal negative 30-degree Celsius temperatures, charging only takes about three extra minutes.

BYD isn't stopping at better batteries. The company launched its "FLASH Charging China" initiative to build 20,000 ultra-fast charging stations nationwide by the end of this year. That infrastructure push addresses one of the biggest concerns potential EV buyers have about making the switch.

The new DENZA D9 showcases where the technology is heading. The plug-in hybrid version drives 401 kilometers on battery power alone, while the fully electric model reaches 800 kilometers. The vehicle also features advanced driver assistance with continuous learning capabilities that improve over time based on real-world driving data.
