BYD Invests €2B in 5-Minute EV Chargers Across Europe

😊 Feel Good

The world's largest electric vehicle maker is spending €2 billion to install 3,000 ultrafast chargers across Europe by 2027, bringing five-minute charging to mainstream EV drivers. The technology could finally make electric cars as convenient as filling up with gas.

Imagine charging your electric car in the time it takes to grab a coffee and use the restroom.

BYD, the world's largest electric vehicle maker, just announced a €2 billion plan to bring five-minute "flash charging" to Europe. The Chinese automaker will install 3,000 ultrafast charging stations across the continent by 2027, including 600 in the UK alone.

The technology is already impressive. BYD's newest models can reach 70 percent charge in just five minutes and nearly full in 12 minutes. That works even in freezing temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Each charging station costs about €580,000, but BYD believes the investment will pay off. "We need to build a very strong infrastructure network," said Stella Li, BYD's top international executive, at the launch of the company's first UK flash-charging station.

The move mirrors Tesla's successful strategy of building Supercharger networks to boost sales. Tesla's chargers currently add 200 miles of range in 15 minutes, but BYD's technology is significantly faster.

BYD's market share in the EU has more than doubled this year, jumping from 0.8 percent to 1.9 percent. In the UK, the company now holds 3.4 percent of the market, ranking above established brands like Renault and Volvo.

The Ripple Effect

The real innovation might be what happens behind the scenes. BYD's flash chargers won't strain local power grids because they draw electricity from on-site battery storage systems. These batteries charge overnight when electricity is cheaper and grid demand is lower.

"Any place we go, we're not adding any burden to the grid," Li explained. This approach could solve one of the biggest infrastructure challenges facing widespread EV adoption.

Li believes flash charging will remove "the final barrier" for consumers switching from gas to electric vehicles. The main challenge now isn't the technology itself but getting local councils to approve installations quickly enough to meet the ambitious 2027 timeline.

BYD is already rolling out 20,000 flash chargers in China by the end of this year. The company plans to bring the battery technology to all its mainstream European models over the next several years, not just premium vehicles.

The future of convenient electric driving is charging faster than anyone expected.
