BYD Tests Chargers That Fill EVs as Fast as Gas Tanks

Imagine pulling up to charge your electric car and leaving just a few minutes later with a full battery, just like filling up with gas.

BYD, the Chinese automaker that outsold Tesla last year, is making that vision real. The company is testing charging stations in Shenzhen that pump out 1,500 kilowatts of power, tripling what Tesla's fastest chargers can deliver.

Today's electric vehicles still take around 20 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent at fast-charging stations. Gas cars fill up in less than five minutes, making that wait time one of the biggest reasons drivers hesitate to go electric.

BYD's new stations look more like traditional gas stations than typical EV charging spots. Cars pull up to overhead plugs instead of backing into parking spaces, making the experience feel familiar and convenient.

The chargers use liquid cooling and run on a 1,000-volt electrical system built specifically for BYD's new "Flash Charge" vehicles. As a safety feature, charging automatically stops at 97 percent battery capacity.

BYD plans to build 4,000 of these stations across China on its own. That number jumps to 15,000 when counting locations partnered with other charging networks, though the company hasn't announced when drivers can start using them.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough arrives as China races ahead in electric vehicle technology. Another Chinese company, Nio, set a record last month by completing nearly 147,000 battery swaps in a single day at stations that replace depleted batteries with charged ones in minutes.

Meanwhile, U.S. fast-charging networks like Electrify America currently max out at 350 kilowatts. American EV adoption grew quickly early this decade but has slowed recently as policy shifts have created space for gas-powered alternatives alongside electric options.

BYD's charging innovation could reshape what drivers expect from electric vehicles worldwide. When charging takes no longer than pumping gas, one of the last major objections to switching disappears.
