BYD to Install 3,000 Ultra-Fast EV Chargers Across Europe

Charging your electric car could soon be as quick as grabbing a coffee.

Chinese automaker BYD just announced plans to install 3,000 ultra-fast charging stations across Europe by the end of 2027. The first stations are already running in Germany and the UK, delivering charging speeds that make today's technology look slow.

The new Flash Chargers pack 1,500 kilowatts of power, three times more powerful than Tesla's newest superchargers. For drivers with compatible BYD vehicles, that translates to charging from empty to 70% in just five minutes. Even for drivers of other electric cars, the speeds will be significantly faster than current options.

BYD is investing roughly $2 billion to build the network, with each charging station costing about $670,000. That's a massive bet on Europe's electric vehicle future, and a clear signal that the company is serious about competing with Tesla's established network of 20,000 European chargers.

The company solved a crucial problem that often holds back fast charging infrastructure. Instead of pulling massive amounts of power directly from the grid, the Flash Chargers store energy in batteries that recharge slowly overnight. This means cities can add ultra-fast charging without overloading their electrical systems during peak hours.

Any electric vehicle with a standard CCS charging port can plug in and power up, making this a win for all EV drivers. Only BYD's newest vehicles equipped with special Blade Batteries can hit the maximum five-minute speeds, but even older electric cars will charge faster than at most current stations.

This infrastructure buildout addresses one of the biggest concerns keeping people from switching to electric vehicles: charging anxiety. When refueling takes minutes instead of hours, electric cars become practical for road trips and long commutes, not just city driving.
