BYD's 5-Minute EV Chargers Launch in Europe at Half Tesla's Price
Chinese automaker BYD just opened ultra-fast charging stations in Europe that can charge electric vehicles in 5 minutes for about half the cost of Tesla Superchargers. The breakthrough technology could finally make EVs as convenient as gas-powered cars.
Charging an electric car is about to get faster and cheaper than ever before.
Chinese automaker BYD has just launched its first Flash Charging stations in Germany and the UK, delivering technology that recharges EVs from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes. That's about as long as it takes to fill up a gas tank at a traditional pump.
The breakthrough comes from BYD's new Blade Battery 2.0 system, which can handle up to 1,500 kilowatts of charging power. To put that in perspective, Tesla's newest V4 Superchargers max out at 500 kilowatts, making BYD's stations three times more powerful.
But the real game changer might be the price. BYD aims to charge around 50 pence per kilowatt hour, significantly undercutting both Tesla and other fast charging networks like Ionity. That's possible because the Flash Chargers draw power from batteries that charge overnight during off-peak grid hours, when electricity costs less.
The company stores that cheap energy and uses it throughout the day to charge customer vehicles. Because the stations are so fast, they can serve more customers per day than competitors, further driving down costs per charge.

BYD is already in talks with supermarkets and retailers across Europe to install chargers in their parking lots. By the end of 2026, the company plans to deploy 300 Flash Chargers across the UK and 3,000 throughout Europe.
Any electric vehicle with a standard CCS charging port can use the new stations, though only cars with BYD's new battery system can receive the maximum charging speed. The company's first compatible vehicle, the luxury Denza Z9 GT, is now available to order in Europe starting at around $134,500.
The Ripple Effect
This technology addresses one of the biggest barriers keeping people from switching to electric vehicles: charging anxiety. If drivers can truly recharge in the same time it takes to pump gas, the experience gap between EVs and traditional cars essentially disappears.
The timing couldn't be better. As European nations push toward carbon-neutral transportation, affordable and convenient charging infrastructure has been the missing piece of the puzzle. BYD's approach of storing off-peak energy also helps balance grid demand, making the entire electric system more efficient.
Early adopters in the UK get an extra incentive: BYD is offering 18 months of free Flash Charging to the first Denza buyers. That means these pioneers can experience the future of transportation without paying a penny for fuel.
The stations even work in extreme cold, taking just 12 minutes to charge from 20% to 97% in temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees Celsius. Winter range anxiety might soon be a thing of the past too.
As BYD rolls out thousands of these stations across Europe over the next two years, filling up an electric car could finally become easier than stopping for gas.
