BYD's $18K Electric SUV Charges in 5 Minutes
Chinese automaker BYD just launched an upgraded electric SUV that costs less than $18,000 and can recharge in about five minutes. The Yuan Plus proves that affordable, fast-charging electric vehicles are no longer a distant dream.
Electric cars just got a whole lot more practical for everyday families, thanks to a breakthrough that makes charging faster than grabbing coffee.
BYD unveiled the third generation of its Yuan Plus electric SUV in China on May 21, starting at just $17,600. The compact crossover comes equipped with revolutionary Blade Battery 2.0 technology that can recharge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes, solving one of the biggest complaints about electric vehicles.
A full charge from nearly empty to 97% takes just nine minutes. For perspective, that's less time than most people spend filling up gas and running into the convenience store.
The upgraded model offers up to 391 miles of driving range depending on battery size. Buyers can choose between a 57.5 kWh battery pack (335 miles range) or a 68.5 kWh version (391 miles range).
What makes this launch particularly exciting is that BYD managed to pack premium features into an affordable package. The Yuan Plus was already the 13th best-selling EV globally in 2025, with nearly 224,000 deliveries, but these upgrades could push it even further.

The new batteries perform remarkably well in extreme weather. At negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit, the charging time only increases by three minutes, addressing another common concern about electric vehicles in cold climates.
The Ripple Effect
While BYD had already introduced this charging technology in luxury models like the Denza Z9 GT, the Yuan Plus brings it to the mass market for the first time. This move signals a major shift in the electric vehicle industry, where cutting-edge technology previously reserved for premium buyers is now accessible to average families.
The vehicle includes thoughtful interior upgrades like a 15.6-inch touchscreen, built-in refrigerator, reclining seats, and an AI voice assistant. For an additional $1,800, buyers can add advanced driver assistance features with LiDAR technology and 30 cameras for highway and city driving assistance.
BYD plans to introduce these upgrades to the European and UK markets later this year, where the vehicle sells as the Atto 3. The company reports higher than expected demand for vehicles equipped with the new battery system.
The timing couldn't be better as BYD faces fresh competition from domestic rivals like Geely and Changan in China's compact SUV segment. The automaker is betting that superior efficiency, lightning-fast charging, and premium features at an affordable price will win over buyers choosing their first electric vehicle.
Making advanced EV technology affordable for millions of families brings us one step closer to a cleaner transportation future.
