France Hits 1 Million Renault Electric Vehicles Made

A country once known for its gas-powered cars just proved electric vehicles can bring both environmental progress and economic renewal at massive scale.

Renault Group reached a powerful milestone this month: one million electric vehicles designed and manufactured in France since 2010. The achievement isn't just about numbers on an assembly line. It represents 39,000 direct jobs at Renault and another 35,000 positions supported throughout the supply chain.

The transformation started with early models like the ZOE and Kangoo ZE when electric vehicles were still considered experimental. Now Renault's northern France hub called Electricity produces 600,000 of those vehicles from facilities in Douai and Maubeuge, making it Europe's largest electric vehicle manufacturing center.

The success story centers on the Renault 5 E-Tech electric, an affordable model starting at €18,810 that's designed for everyday drivers. The factory produced its 100,000th Renault 5 by late 2025 and expects to hit 200,000 units this year, showing strong consumer demand for locally made electric options.

Real people are benefiting from this shift. Between 2022 and 2025, the Electricity hub created 700 permanent positions. Another 300 jobs are being filled through 2027, plus 550 temporary workers hired since October to keep up with orders. The Douai plant even started night shifts to meet growing demand.

Renault invested €13 billion since 2021 to transform its French facilities for electric production and plans another €13 billion investment in the coming years. That money funded new training programs too: 53,000 employees learned skills in battery technology, artificial intelligence, and circular economy practices through Reknow University.

The facilities now produce vehicles for multiple brands including Alpine, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and soon Ford, strengthening France's position in the European automotive industry. Each plant specializes in different models, from the Trafic Van in Maubeuge to the Master at Batilly, creating a complete electric vehicle ecosystem.

This manufacturing boom is revitalizing France's industrial heartland. Towns like Douai that once faced uncertain futures now anchor a growing clean technology sector. Suppliers throughout the region gained stability as electric vehicle production ramped up, protecting livelihoods while advancing environmental goals.

The story proves a crucial point: transitioning to clean energy doesn't require sacrificing jobs or economic strength. When companies commit long-term to both workers and sustainability, entire regions can thrive while building a better future. France chose to invest in its people and their skills, and the results show that green manufacturing can compete globally while keeping communities strong.
