BYD's Electric Truck Charges in 20 Minutes, Hauls 44 Tons

The future of clean freight shipping just accelerated, and it's coming from a company better known for affordable electric cars than big rigs.

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD unveiled its ETT 44 electric semi truck this week at a major transportation trade show in Germany. The heavy-duty hauler can carry 44 tons of cargo, matches the maximum allowed on European roads, and travels 373 miles on a single charge.

But the real game changer is how fast it recharges. Using BYD's new Megacharger stations, the truck can juice up from 20% to 80% battery in just 20 minutes. That adds 248 miles of range in less time than a driver's mandatory European rest break.

The truck runs on BYD's proven Blade Battery technology, the same lithium iron phosphate cells used in their passenger cars. These batteries come with a 10-year warranty covering roughly 746,000 miles, outlasting competing warranties from established truck makers Scania and Volvo by two years.

BYD designed the ETT 44 to survive more than 5,000 charge cycles and handle high temperatures and impacts safely. Euro NCAP awarded it a five-star safety rating, and it includes 12 driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection.

The truck's cab includes practical touches for long-haul drivers: a 13-inch display screen, a refrigerator, and a comfortable sleeping area. It can reach speeds up to 56 mph, meeting European highway requirements.

Tesla announced at the same event that it's bringing its Semi truck to Europe late next year, setting up a direct competition. Tesla's European model will carry 40 tons, travel 325 miles per charge, and recharge to 60% capacity in 30 minutes. BYD edges ahead on all three specs.

Price-wise, the trucks will compete closely. The ETT 44 starts around $289,000, while Tesla's Semi costs about $260,000 in the US and will likely price similarly in Europe.

The Ripple Effect

This competition between electric truck makers signals a major shift in reducing transportation emissions. Heavy trucks account for a significant portion of global carbon emissions, and making them electric with practical charging times solves one of the industry's biggest obstacles.

BYD sweetens the deal with what it calls Cost of Mobility, helping fleet owners arrange financing and charging infrastructure through a single company. This removes headaches that have slowed electric truck adoption.

The company plans to start manufacturing the ETT 44 in China later this year and will build a European production facility to serve that market directly. That positions BYD to compete not just with Tesla but with legacy truck makers like Mercedes and Volvo.
