Cal Rugby Wins 30th Title With Perfect 17-0 Season

The California Golden Bears rugby team just completed something they haven't done in 14 years: a perfect season crowned with a national championship.

Cal defeated the United States Naval Academy 36-22 Saturday in Indianapolis, finishing their season with a flawless 17-0 record. It's the program's 30th national championship and marks legendary coach Jack Clark's 31st title across his storied career.

The Bears came out swinging in the first minute when sophomore Oliver Teague scooped up a Navy turnover and broke three tackles to score. Navy fought back to tie the game, but Cal's speed and strategy soon took over.

Sophomore Masi Koi became a standout star, sprinting through Navy's defense and sidestepping defenders all the way to the try line just before halftime. His electrifying run helped Cal take a commanding 26-5 lead into the break.

Navy refused to quit. When Cal received two yellow cards in the second half, playing down two men, the Midshipmen capitalized with back-to-back tries to cut the lead to 31-22 with 12 minutes remaining.

But junior Nate Comiskey, who led the team with 22 tries this season, sealed the victory with his second score of the game in the final minute. The celebration was on.

Coach Clark, now with 31 national titles to his name, showed the kind of confidence that comes from building something bigger than himself. "I had great trust in our team today," he said after the game, crediting his players for rising to the moment.

Vice captain Solomon Williams was speechless after the win. "This feeling, this group, this journey, the support system we have...we can't thank all those people enough," he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Captain Rand Santos praised Navy's toughness while celebrating what his team accomplished together. For the seniors who spent four years building this program, the perfect season was the ultimate sendoff to their college careers.
