Solar panels and wind turbines generating renewable electricity under sunny blue sky

California and Texas Lead U.S. in Clean Energy Growth

🤯 Mind Blown

Despite opposite political approaches, California and Texas now generate over one-third of America's solar and wind power. Both states prove clean energy can thrive through different paths, offering hope for nationwide progress.

Two states with nothing in common politically just proved that clean energy doesn't care about red or blue. California and Texas together produce more than one-third of America's solar and wind power, despite taking completely opposite approaches to get there.

The numbers tell an inspiring story. Wind and solar now account for 40% of California's power and 30% of Texas's power, both far above the national average of 17%. Even more impressive, every single bit of new electricity generation in both states over the past 15 years came from solar panels and wind turbines.

California took the regulatory route, setting strict renewable energy standards starting in 2002 and gradually increasing them. The state now requires 60% renewable power by 2030 and 100% zero-carbon electricity by 2045. Top-down planning worked, and California is on track to hit those ambitious targets.

Texas chose a wildly different path. Instead of mandates, the state built 3,600 miles of transmission lines between 2008 and 2019 to connect windy areas to cities. When wind energy became the cheapest power source in 2011, Texas was ready. Today Texas generates more wind power than the next three states combined.

California and Texas Lead U.S. in Clean Energy Growth

"California has used centralized state control to achieve lots of wind, solar, and storage, while Texas has accomplished the same outcomes via open-access and competitive choice," explains Beth Garza, senior fellow with R Street's energy and environmental policy team. Both approaches worked because the economics made sense.

The momentum keeps building. The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts record-breaking solar and battery installations in 2026, with Texas alone accounting for 40% of new solar capacity and 53% of new battery storage nationwide. California will add another 6% and 14% respectively.

The Ripple Effect spreads far beyond state borders. Together, these two states now hold over half of America's battery storage capacity, creating a blueprint for energy storage that other states can follow. Their combined success proves that political differences don't have to block climate progress, and that multiple policy approaches can achieve the same positive outcome.

The money tells the real story. In both states, solar and wind win on pure economics now, not just environmental benefits. Whether through California's efficiency-focused planning or Texas's competitive markets, renewable energy costs less and delivers more.

Different paths, same destination, and a cleaner future for everyone.
