California Launches Same-Day Opioid Treatment Hotline

When someone decides they're ready to get help for addiction, waiting days or weeks for treatment can mean the difference between recovery and tragedy. California just removed that wait with a new statewide hotline that connects people to opioid treatment the same day they call.

CA Bridge Connect launched this week as a free call and text service that anyone in California can use, regardless of insurance. The confidential helpline serves people seeking help, their families, caregivers, and clinicians who want to connect patients to care.

Here's what makes it powerful. People who reach out get immediate access to Behavioral Health Navigators who assess their needs and coordinate real-time referrals to clinics, emergency departments, and telehealth providers. When appropriate, these navigators can prescribe Medication for Addiction Treatment right away, an evidence-based approach that significantly improves recovery outcomes.

The service runs Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. Californians can call 1-800-944-1807 or text 1-833-308-0461 to get connected.

This builds on California's existing CA Bridge program, which since 2018 has been expanding low-barrier access to addiction treatment through emergency departments and community providers. The results prove that when treatment is accessible, people want help.

Forty percent of patients offered treatment in emergency departments accepted it. When they met with a substance use navigator, that acceptance rate jumped to 85 percent. Even patients visiting the ER for completely unrelated issues accepted addiction treatment more than half the time when it was offered.

The new hotline fits into California's broader "no wrong door" approach to care, which recognizes that people seeking help shouldn't have to navigate a maze of barriers. By adding another simplified entry point, the state is making it possible for someone to get treatment whether they walk into an ER, call a crisis line, or reach out directly through CA Bridge Connect.

California has been attacking the overdose epidemic from multiple angles. The state now offers CalRx-branded naloxone at significantly lower prices, while eligible entities can receive free naloxone kits that have already reversed over 460,000 overdoses. Recent legislation requires treatment facilities to either offer medication-assisted treatment directly or maintain effective referral processes.
