California Life Sciences Adds 400K Jobs, $394B Economy

California's life sciences industry just proved it's an economic powerhouse, supporting over 400,000 jobs while generating nearly $394 billion in economic activity last year.

The 2026 California Life Sciences Economic Impact Report, released at the BIO International Convention in San Diego last month, reveals how the state's biotech, pharmaceutical, medical device, and research sectors continue leading the nation in scientific advancement and healthcare innovation. UC San Diego's Center for Research + Evaluation partnered with Biocom to produce the comprehensive analysis.

This year's report breaks new ground by going beyond spreadsheets and statistics. Researchers interviewed executives from life sciences companies across California, including leaders from San Diego-based firms like Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, to understand the human stories behind the numbers.

"The numbers in this report are impressive, but they only tell part of the story," said Tim Scott, president and CEO of Biocom. "Behind every job, breakthrough and investment are scientists, entrepreneurs, manufacturers and innovators working to solve some of the world's most pressing health challenges."

The report includes five narrative profiles exploring how innovation, entrepreneurship, and workforce development intersect in communities throughout the state. These stories show scientists developing new treatments, entrepreneurs launching startups, and manufacturers creating high-quality jobs that support families across California.

Kelly Nielsen, Director of UC San Diego's Center for Research + Evaluation, explained that combining economic data with real-world experiences creates a fuller picture. The partnership brings together Biocom's industry expertise with UC San Diego's strengths in economic analysis and workforce research.
