California Satellites Catch Methane Leaks in Real Time

California just proved we can pull the emergency brake on global warming, and it starts from space.

The state's new Satellite Methane Program uses real-time data from orbiting satellites to catch methane leaks the moment they happen. Operators on the ground get instant alerts and can fix the leaks immediately, turning invisible pollution into a solvable problem.

Methane and similar pollutants cause nearly half of today's global warming. Unlike carbon dioxide, which lingers for centuries, methane exits the atmosphere in just years but packs 80 times the warming punch while it's there.

That makes methane the perfect target for quick climate wins. Stop a leak today, and you slow warming almost immediately.

At San Francisco Climate Week, over 80 policymakers, scientists, and funders gathered to share how this breakthrough became reality. Cliff Rechtschaffen from California's Air Resources Board compared the fight to a basketball game: "We're in the second quarter of the methane race."

The technology already exists. What was missing were the policy signals and money to make it happen at scale.

California invested $100 million to buy satellite data from Carbon Mapper after a decade of research and pilot programs built confidence in the technology. The state launched its program in mid-2025, and the results speak for themselves.

Phil Duffy, Chief Scientist at Spark Climate Solutions, explained the game changer. Traditional emission tracking relies on outdated estimates and guesswork, leading to massive undercounting. Satellites, drones, and airplane sensors provide actual measurements, revealing the true scope of the problem and exactly where to fix it.

The Ripple Effect

California's model is already spreading globally. The Subnational Methane Action Coalition, co-led by UC Berkeley's Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, is helping other regions adopt the same approach.

Cities and states worldwide can now follow California's playbook: measure accurately, alert quickly, fix immediately. The technology works, the policy framework exists, and the financial model has proven itself.

Scientists say one major challenge remains: the math we use to calculate methane's impact flattens how dangerous these superpollutants really are. Fixing that accounting would unlock even more investment in solutions that can slow warming in our lifetime, not our grandchildren's.

What started as a California experiment has become a blueprint for emergency climate action that delivers results you can measure in months, not decades.
