Several major automakers responded by scaling back their EV production plans, creating uncertainty in the market.

California's program has clear eligibility rules designed to make electric vehicles accessible to new buyers. New EVs must cost $50,000 or less, while used models need to be priced at $25,000 or under. The rebates apply only to first-time EV buyers, confirmed through a simple buyer attestation that they've never owned a zero-emission vehicle before.

For most eligible buyers, these rebates translate to getting between 4% and 7% of their purchase price back immediately. That's real money that makes the jump to electric more manageable for California families considering their first EV.
