Canada Nickel developed a proprietary technology called In-Process Tailings Carbonization that injects concentrated CO2 into waste material during processing. The carbon gets locked into the rock geologically in less than 36 hours, working 8 to 12 times faster than passive carbon capture methods. Lab tests show the process can store at least 26 tons of CO2 for every ton of nickel extracted.

The numbers translate to real climate impact. Capturing 1.5 million tons of CO2 annually equals taking 350,000 gas-powered cars off the road for a year. It's equivalent to the carbon savings from 450 wind turbines running nonstop for 12 months.
The Ripple Effect
Crawford's 41-year operating life could eventually scale up to capture 15 million tons of CO2 per year as operations expand. The company will fund construction partly through carbon credit sales, receiving up to 50% in tax credits for carbon storage. That financial model proves environmental responsibility can align with economic viability.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes Crawford will establish a worldwide standard for responsible mining. CEO Mark Selby says the approval "recognizes the strategic importance of responsibly developing Canada's critical mineral resources in partnership with all levels of government and Indigenous Nations while maintaining rigorous environmental standards."
Construction decisions are expected by 2027, with operations processing 48,000 tons of material daily once operational.
