Canada's Floating Island Travels 30km Across Reservoir

Imagine checking satellite images of a lake and finding an island the size of two football fields that wasn't there before. That's exactly what happened this summer in British Columbia's Williston Lake.

Boaters first spotted the mysterious island in July, covered in mature trees and spanning thousands of square meters. Officials thought it might be an illusion or even an AI-generated fake until satellite images from July 21 confirmed the impossible: a brand new island had appeared.

Then things got even stranger. By August 5, the island had completely disappeared.

Fifteen days later, satellite images captured the wandering landmass resting against the shore more than 30 kilometers from where it first appeared. The island had floated across the entire reservoir like nature's own magic trick.

Bob Gammer from BC Hydro, the company overseeing the reservoir, explains that record-high water levels this year likely lifted a mat of floating wood and shallow-rooted trees from the shoreline. Strong winds then sent it sailing across the water.

"Floating vegetated islands of this size are rare, but they can occur in large reservoirs like Williston, particularly when water levels are higher than they have been for some time," Gammer says.

The Bright Side

This wandering island isn't alone in the world. Floating islands exist in wetlands across the globe, where pieces of shoreline naturally break free and drift across the water.

Wisconsin's famous Forty Acre Bog is one example. Scientists believe it detached from its lake bottom and now floats around the surface, supporting its own ecosystem of plants and trees.

These natural phenomena remind us that our planet still holds surprises. Even in well-studied places like British Columbia, nature finds ways to astonish us with events that seem almost magical.

As of late August, the Williston Lake island appears to be clinging peacefully to the shoreline. Whether it stays put or sets off on another journey remains to be seen, but for now, this accidental voyager has found a place to rest.
