Canadian Astronaut Brings Indigenous Wisdom to Space

When Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen traveled farther from Earth than any human has gone before, he carried more than scientific instruments. Tucked in his spacesuit was a mission patch representing ancient Indigenous wisdom that guides him through each day.

For over a decade, Hansen has spent time with Indigenous elders across Canada, learning teachings that connect him to something deeper than rocket science. Before the Artemis II launch, he sought their guidance once again.

"If I can give you one piece of advice, sit with your elders and ask questions," Hansen shared from space. "But listen intently. Every time I've stopped to listen, I've just learned these amazing things."

His personal mission patch, created by Anishinaabe artist Henry Guimond from the Turtle Lodge, features seven animals representing the Seven Sacred Laws. Each morning, Hansen wakes with a simple mantra: spend the day walking with these attributes.

The buffalo teaches respect through giving its entire being to help others live. The eagle represents love and the vision to see one's true purpose. The bear embodies the courage to face challenges and do what's right.

Sasquatch symbolizes honesty and being true to one's word. The beaver shows wisdom in using our gifts to serve others. The wolf represents humility and recognizing we are all equal under the sun. The turtle is truth itself, leaving a trail for us to follow.

Hansen says these teachings helped the crew name their Orion spacecraft "Integrity." For him, being in integrity means walking in accordance with these seven sacred laws.

Why This Inspires

In an age of technology and data, Hansen reminds us that ancient wisdom still has power. Indigenous elders have preserved these teachings for generations, and now they're traveling to the moon.

The Canadian Space Agency notes that understanding truth requires first learning the other six teachings. It's a reminder that our greatest journeys, whether to space or through daily life, need more than technical knowledge.
