Canadian Runner Breaks 400m Record at World Championships

A Canadian sprinter proved that patience pays off, storming from behind to claim gold and smash a championship record at the World Indoor Championships in Poland.

Christopher Morales Williams won the 400m title on Saturday with a time of 44.76 seconds, breaking the previous championship record. The race showcased two of the fastest indoor 400m runners ever, as USA's Khaleb McRae pushed hard from the start and held the lead through most of the race.

McRae looked unstoppable around the bend and along the back straight, building a lead of several strides. But Morales Williams stayed calm, waiting for his moment.

Coming off the final curve, the Canadian found another gear. He surged past McRae and powered through the finish line, claiming both the gold medal and the championship record in just his third-fastest career performance.

"I have worked hard for this," Morales Williams said after the race. "A gold and a championship record—I could not ask for more."

His strategy showed remarkable composure for someone relatively new to the world stage. "I was not worried about being behind for most of the race as closing is what I do best, so I actually love to be behind," he explained.

McRae finished second in 45.03 seconds, earning his first individual global medal. Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards, the 2022 world indoor champion, took bronze in 45.39.
