New Zealand Youth Win Double Silver in Canoe Polo

New Zealand's youth canoe polo players just proved that small communities can compete on the world's biggest stages.

Both under-21 teams claimed silver medals at the world championships in Duisburg, Germany, marking the first time New Zealand's junior squads have reached the podium. The achievement becomes even more impressive considering 76 teams from around the world competed across four divisions.

The under-21 men's team fought their way to the final before falling 7-2 to France. The women's squad pushed Spain to the wire in a nail-biting 3-2 final loss.

Several players from Manawatū, a region on New Zealand's North Island, represented their country in both age groups. Tom Hawinkels, Luke Shepherd, Scott Gray, and Liam McEwan competed for the men's team, while Ellery Nielsen and Abby Jacob paddled for the women.

The Manawatū contingent extended beyond players. Carl Massarotto served as assistant coach and event commentator, while Kate Blincoe and Bede Skinner coached the women's team. James Mitchell officiated as a tournament referee.

New Zealand's senior teams also competed well despite challenging preparation conditions. The open men finished sixth out of 24 teams, while the women placed 11th out of 18.

The Ripple Effect

The timing made these results even more remarkable. New Zealand's teams came straight out of their winter season with limited access to water training and competition. European teams had been practicing and competing in ideal conditions leading up to the championships.

That disadvantage didn't stop the Kiwi paddlers from reaching heights their program had never achieved before. The double silver medals signal growing strength in New Zealand canoe polo, particularly at the youth level where future champions develop.

The strong showing from a small regional program like Manawatū demonstrates how grassroots sports development creates pathways to international success. When communities invest in young athletes and support quality coaching, those investments pay dividends on the world stage.
