Canadian School District Transforms Student Support System

Students in Alberta's Aspen View Public School District are getting the kind of support that turns struggling days into successful ones.

The rural district now employs four full-time school counselors who work directly with students on anxiety, stress management, and emotional regulation. These professionals team up with community health partners and respond to crisis situations, creating a safety net that catches students before they fall through the cracks.

Teachers serve as the first line of defense, trained to spot behavioral changes that signal a student needs help. When they notice something's off, they connect directly with counselors or principals to get kids the support they need quickly.

The district partnered with the Calgary Police Youth Foundation to bring a dedicated mental health professional into Whispering Hills Primary School.
