Canadian Woman Gives 400+ Free Bikes to Kids Each Year

A single day in Moncton, Canada looked different this year when 88 children rode home on their very first bicycles, all thanks to one woman's 14-year mission to get kids back outside.

Krista Richard runs Bikes and Trikes for Everyone, a program that collects donated bicycles, fixes them up, and gives them away for free to children in need. What began as a simple act of kindness has transformed into a movement that delivered more than 400 bikes to new homes last year alone.

Richard doesn't just see bikes as toys. She views them as tools that rebuild community connections in an age when screens keep neighbors strangers.

"With all these video games, there's no social contact and people don't know who their neighbors are anymore," Richard told CBC. "But if you get a bunch of kids on their bike, then they get to know each other and then the families get to know each other."

The demand tells the story of how many families struggle to afford what many consider a childhood staple. More than 400 children currently sit on Richard's waiting list, hoping for their chance to experience the freedom of riding through their neighborhood with friends.
