Union Surprises Cancer Survivor Carter Boyle With New Bike

When Heavy & Highway Construction Laborers Local 158 Business Manager Jamie Andrews saw young Carter Boyle pedaling an old bike during a cancer fundraiser, he knew his union could do something special.

Carter, a cancer survivor, was participating in the July 19 Great Big Group Ride fundraiser for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley alongside his grandfather, Paul Boyle. It was his first time joining the annual cycling event that raises money for children and families affected by childhood cancer.

Andrews quickly organized a collection among local and state union members to purchase Carter a new bicycle. Less than a week after the boy's birthday, family and friends gathered at the foundation's South Whitehall headquarters on July 31 for a surprise presentation.

Carter's siblings, Cash and Cannon, joined Laborers Local 158 members from the Coplay office and Pediatric Cancer Foundation staff for the big reveal. The young survivor received a personalized Trek road bike, a significant upgrade from his previous wheels.

"These guys do a fantastic job at PCFLV with everything they do, and this was just an opportunity we had to take," Andrews said. The union had already signed on as a major sponsor of the Great Big Group Ride, but members wanted to go further to support one brave participant.
