Cancer Survivor Brings Free Health Screenings to Newburgh

When Luis Abramson survived cancer twice, he knew he had to turn his experience into action for his Orange County neighbors.

The two-time cancer survivor partnered with the Orange County Department of Health to create the Annual Sweetheart Screening, a free health event that returned to Newburgh's Unity Armory Center this Valentine's Day weekend. His nonprofit, CHJIS Support Services, helped bring six critical health screenings to a community where many residents lack access to preventive care.

"I've lived and walked in the shoes as a survivor of cancer," said Abramson, who took a prostate screening test himself at the event. "Screenings save lives."

Over four hours, hundreds of community members received free blood pressure, cholesterol, breast, prostate, skin, and vision checks. Halfway through the event, more than 40 people had already gotten cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, while 25 to 30 people received skin cancer checks from Dr. Josh Shapiro, a dermatologist with 23 years of experience.

The breast exam station saw particularly meaningful turnout. Cornerstone Family Health Center staff registered guests for complimentary exams conducted in a private mobile facility, with many expressing relief and gratitude.

"Everyone who has gotten an exam today has been extremely grateful," said Ralph Burnett, Outreach Coordinator for Cornerstone. "Many had no insurance and were very worried they could not get the exam, so they were happy to find out they could do so here for no charge."

The Ripple Effect

The event's impact extends far beyond one day of screenings. Organizations like Mount Sinai, the American Cancer Society, NAACP Middletown's Health Committee, and SUNY Orange joined forces to provide education on when to get screened and what resources exist in Orange County.

Dr. Shapiro noted that skin cancer, while one of the most common cancers, is highly curable when caught early. His presence at community screening events throughout Orange County means more residents can catch problems before they become life-threatening.

The mobile units and partnerships established through the Sweetheart Screening continue year-round. Cornerstone brings its mobile facility to the Broadway Farmers Market each October, and health organizations maintain connections with residents who might otherwise never see a doctor.

Abramson shared a statistic that drives his mission: one in eight men will get prostate cancer. A simple blood test, the kind offered free at his event, can make all the difference between early detection and a devastating diagnosis.

The day included more than medical services. A DJ played music, guests enjoyed pizza and salad, took photos in a booth, and won prizes while health experts delivered seminars on cancer prevention and the importance of screenings for lung, cervical, and colon cancer.

The message throughout the celebration was clear: early detection saves lives.
