Cancer Survivor Makes 1,100+ Warmth Capes for Patients

When Terry Kelly pulled a simple shawl from her chemo care basket in 2019, she had no idea it would spark a movement of warmth and comfort for over a thousand people.

The Tucson resident was battling cancer with both chemotherapy and radiation when a close friend gifted her a basket filled with items to help her through treatment. Inside was a cozy shawl that became her constant companion during those difficult days.

As Kelly wrapped herself in that warmth, inspiration struck. "I pulled out that shawl, and I looked at it and thought, I could make these," she said.

After beating cancer, Kelly didn't just think about it. She got to work.

She started sewing handmade capes and shawls for kids, teenagers, and adults facing their own cancer battles. Each one comes finished with a brooch, a ribbon, and a heartfelt unsigned note that reads: "My 'BFF' bought me a cape, like this one that I have made for you. It kept me warm while I was going through cancer treatments, and I hope it keeps you warm too."

The anonymity is intentional. Kelly wants each recipient to feel the same comfort she did, knowing someone cares without needing recognition in return.

To date, she's created more than 1,100 capes. This past weekend alone, she distributed over 100 of them at CureFest for Childhood Cancer, an annual event in Washington, D.C.
