Cancer Survivor Shares £1M Prize with Medical Charities

Joy Haythorne opened a safety deposit box live on Heart Radio and discovered she'd won £1 million, but her first thoughts weren't about herself.

The retired hairdresser from Botley near Southampton immediately announced plans to share her windfall with the air ambulance service, Macmillan Cancer Support, and cancer research charities. Her decision comes from deeply personal experience.

Joy recently learned she's in remission from cancer. Her husband Bill passed away from the disease, making her mission to give back even more meaningful.

"My husband died with cancer as well, so that's why it's important to me to donate money to Macmillan," Joy said through tears of joy as confetti cannons exploded around her at Heart HQ with host Amanda Holden. "And also to cancer research, because without them I probably wouldn't have been here."

Her commitment to supporting air ambulance services reflects a universal truth she wants others to remember. "None of us know when we're going to need an air ambulance," she said simply.

Moments after Joy won, producers surprised her by bringing her son Darren into the studio. The emotional reunion left him "lost for words," he admitted.

Joy praised her tight-knit support system, including her daughter-in-law Tracy, who works in oncology at Southampton Hospital and helped the family through their darkest days. "I've got marvellous friends that came to chemo with me and everything," she shared.
