Union Surprises Teen Cancer Survivor with New Trek Bike

When Carter Boyle showed up to his first Great Big Group Ride on an old bicycle, he had no idea the union workers around him were already planning something special.

The 14-year-old cancer survivor from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, was just excited to ride alongside his grandfather Paul in the July 19 fundraiser. But Jamie Andrews, Business Manager for Heavy and Highway Construction Laborers Local 158, noticed Carter's worn bike and felt called to act.

Andrews organized a collection among local and state union members to replace Carter's aging bicycle. Less than two weeks later, on July 31, they surprised Carter with a personalized Trek road bike at the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley headquarters.

Carter's younger brothers, Cash, 11, and Cannon, 9, joined other family members and union workers for the presentation. The gift came just days after Carter celebrated his 14th birthday, making the moment even more meaningful.

"These guys do a fantastic job at PCFLV with everything they do, and this was just an opportunity we had to take," Andrews said. Local 158 serves as a major sponsor of the annual cycling event, which raises funds to support children and families affected by childhood cancer.
