Therapy Dogs Bring Joy to WellSpan Hospital Patients

When a patient who hadn't spoken in five years suddenly tried to talk after a therapy dog visited her, everyone in the room understood the healing power of four paws and a wagging tail.

Across WellSpan hospitals in Pennsylvania, volunteer therapy dogs and their handlers walk the halls bringing comfort to patients, families, and medical staff. These furry volunteers have been offering joy during difficult moments for years, and their impact goes far beyond a quick pet or cuddle.

Sharan and Lenny have volunteered with their Great Danes at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital for 24 years. Their journey began when they saw how their dogs brightened the face of a sad woman at their father's assisted living facility. Now Murphy, Daisy, and Archie make regular rounds, giving patients who miss their own pets a much-needed connection.

The three dogs have become so familiar with the hospital that Archie knows exactly where every nurse manager's office is located. He stops in to say hello during his visits, bringing smiles to staff members having tough days.

Ann volunteers with Willis, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, at WellSpan York Hospital. After retiring three years ago, she wanted to make a difference by connecting with people. Willis makes everyone smile, even those who don't consider themselves dog people.

One of their most meaningful visits came after police officers were shot in York. Ann and Willis visited Lt. David Godfrey multiple times while he was unconscious. When he finally woke and met Willis, he immediately warmed to the little dog, and Ann later learned he was also a dog handler himself.

These therapy dogs do more than provide temporary distraction. They create moments of genuine connection when people need it most. A patient's wife once told Ann that Willis gave her unconscious husband a "get-well" kiss by licking his hand, and his eyes immediately twitched and he began to move. Through tears, she said, "You gave my husband joy."

Susanne has volunteered with her dog Aulfynn for 11 years at WellSpan Gettysburg and Waynesboro hospitals. She says pet therapy has become an important part of their lives, helping everyone involved including the volunteers themselves.

These dedicated volunteers and their therapy dogs remind us that healing takes many forms, and sometimes the best medicine comes with four paws and unconditional love.
