Scientists have created a custom cancer vaccine that's keeping women with triple-negative breast cancer healthy years after treatment, offering new hope for one of the most aggressive forms of the disease.

Fourteen women with triple-negative breast cancer received personalized mRNA vaccines after surgery and chemotherapy. The vaccine works by packaging custom instructions into tiny bubbles of fat that deliver the code directly to immune cells throughout the body. Unlike traditional vaccines that use weakened viruses, this approach uses the same mRNA technology that powered COVID-19 vaccines. The difference is personalization: each vaccine is built from scratch using the patient's own tumor DNA.

One patient who relapsed initially had the weakest vaccine response but achieved complete remission after adding another immune therapy. This suggests the vaccine primed her immune system to respond better to additional treatment.
