Cape Town Woman's Hair Regrows Days After Scalding Accident

Sonja Jacobs thought she'd be scarred for life after accidentally pouring boiling water on her head the morning of her brother's funeral. Instead, her hair started growing back within days.

The Mitchells Plain, Cape Town resident was preparing for the funeral on May 16 when the accident happened. Distracted by grief and overwhelmed with preparations, she poured hot water into a bowl and dipped her head in without adding cold water first.

The scalding left painful burns and open wounds across the back of her scalp. Staff at Mitchells Plain Hospital immediately treated her injuries and shock, but doctors warned her the full damage was unclear.

Samples went to Tygerberg Hospital for assessment. When results came back, doctors delivered good news: the damage wasn't as severe as feared.

Still, Jacobs faced painful sores and slow healing. Her son suggested an ointment he'd seen advertised online, which she ordered and began using on the affected areas.
