Capitol Hill Hosts 800 Guests at Pet Adoption Event

Puppies melted hearts and changed minds on Capitol Hill last Thursday when the ASPCA turned a legislative building into an adoption fair with a mission.

The animal welfare organization hosted Paws for Luck on March 5, bringing adorable adoptable pets from six local Washington DC area shelters and rescues to meet congressional staff and lawmakers. The goal was simple: spotlight the lifesaving work shelters do every day and help animals find loving homes.

More than 800 attendees stopped by throughout the day to meet playful puppies, curious kittens, and other pets looking for their second chance. The animals posed for selfies, received countless belly rubs, and won over even the toughest crowd.

Ten members of Congress joined the event, including both co-chairs of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus. Representatives Mike Quigley and Sharice Davids spent time with shelter staff and the animals, helping shine a light on the critical support shelters need to continue their work.

The best part? Several guests began the adoption process during the event, taking the first steps toward adding a four-legged family member to their household.

The Ripple Effect

Events like Paws for Luck create waves that extend far beyond one heartwarming afternoon. When lawmakers and their staff witness the dedication of shelter workers firsthand and meet the animals waiting for homes, it reinforces why animal welfare policies matter.

The Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, founded in 2009, works across party lines to advance animal welfare legislation. This bipartisan group hosts forums and briefings to tackle challenges facing animals and push for stronger protections.

Six local organizations participated in the event: Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation, Operation Paws for Homes Rescue, Brandywine Valley SPCA, Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, and A Cat's Life Rescue. These groups provide safety, medical care, and hope to countless animals throughout the year.

The timing around St. Patrick's Day added a festive touch, but the luck was all for the shelter pets who got extra visibility and a chance to meet hundreds of potential adopters in one day.

Every adoption saves a life and opens up space for another animal in need.
