😊 Feel Good

A Florida Keys fishing captain and a Pennsylvania family battled a nearly 500-pound swordfish for five hours, then donated most of the meat to their community. The rare catch brought neighbors together for an unexpected feast.

When Captain Jose Rodriguez Jr. set out for what seemed like a normal fishing charter on February 18, he had no idea he'd soon be fighting a deep-sea giant that would feed his entire town.

The 25-year-old captain from Cudjoe Key, Florida, was celebrating a Pennsylvania family's high school graduation aboard his boat when they hooked something extraordinary. After getting a good look at the fish, Rodriguez and his mate knew they had found something special.

What followed was a grueling five-hour battle against a 480-pound swordfish, one of the largest caught in the Florida Keys in recent years. The family's two children cheered them on as Rodriguez fought to land the massive fish.

"Everyone's in search of a nickel, which is 500 pounds, but it rarely happens in the Keys," Rodriguez told reporters. Only a handful of similar catches have been documented in the past decade, including a legendary 757-pound broadbill in 2019.

Getting the giant fish onto the boat was just the beginning. The swordfish was so massive it had to lie on the back deck covered with ice bags and towels. Rodriguez and his crew sprayed it with saltwater to bring down its core temperature, then filleted the entire fish right there on the boat.

The Pennsylvania family took home 20 to 30 pounds of fresh swordfish meat to remember their graduation celebration. But with over 200 pounds of meat total, they made a generous decision that would impact the whole community.

The Ripple Effect

Word spread quickly through Cudjoe Key about the massive catch. Between 50 and 70 neighbors turned out to admire the fish and celebrate the rare achievement.

The Pennsylvania family donated the remaining meat to anyone in town who wanted it. Fresh swordfish became the meal of the day across the small Florida Keys community.

"The whole community was eating swordfish that day," Rodriguez said with a laugh. What started as a private celebration turned into a neighborhood feast that brought people together over an unexpected gift from the sea.

Rodriguez, who takes clients fishing four to five times a week through his family business Above & Below Fishing Adventures, said he's become something of a local celebrity. But he credits luck more than skill for landing the catch of a lifetime that fed his town.
