Firefighter Rescues 5 Ducklings From 30-Foot Storm Drain

Matt Klein was just heading to Home Depot for project supplies when he noticed something unusual: a duck pacing frantically beside a storm drain near Pittsburgh.

The North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighter stopped to investigate. Five tiny ducklings were trapped below the grate, unable to climb out on their own.

Klein immediately got to work, rescuing two ducklings before calling his department for backup. The remaining three would need more help, especially the last duckling that had traveled nearly 30 feet down a drain pipe into another catch basin.

The firefighters came up with an innovative solution. They used water from their fire engine to gently move the duckling to a spot where they could safely reach it.

All five ducklings emerged unharmed and were quickly reunited with their anxious mother. What started as a routine errand became a memorable rescue for Klein and his community.

Storm drains and other infrastructure we barely notice can become death traps for small wildlife. Baby ducks lack the strength or climbing ability to escape these metal grates, and without help, they rarely survive.
