Care Home Brings Fox to 85-Year-Old's Final Wish in Bradford
An elderly man with dementia got to meet a rescue fox at his bedside, fulfilling a lifelong love. The memory stayed with him even as other memories faded away.
A care home in Bradford, England brought a rescue fox to visit an 85-year-old man's bedside, creating a memory so powerful it outlasted his dementia.
Colin Emmitt spent his life loving foxes. He collected fox ornaments, watched them play in his garden, and earned the nickname "fox" from his family. When staff at Bingley Park care home learned about his end-of-life wish, they contacted the Fox Angels Foundation hoping he could at least see one through a window.
They got something better. On January 19, a seven-year-old rescue fox named Ben arrived for an in-person visit. Emmitt gently stroked the animal while the two gazed into each other's eyes.
The impact stunned his daughter Sharon Dalby. "He can't remember what he had for tea or lunch after half an hour, but he still remembers Ben from two weeks ago," she said. Her father stayed awake the entire visit, unusual for someone who normally dozes constantly.

Ben's handler Les Hemstock called the moment "really touching." He watched as Emmitt stroked Ben's face and the pair became transfixed with each other.
Sunny's Take
Ben's own story adds another layer of meaning. He was rescued at just one week old after being found without his mother. While his siblings eventually returned to the wild, Ben struggled with health issues and formed a close bond with Hemstock, who now cares for him at a sanctuary.
Hemstock uses moments like these to remind people that foxes belong in the wild. "Foxes do not make good pets," he said. "They prefer to be in the wild and should be wherever possible."
For a man who worked as a wool sorter, wagon driver, and chauffeur before memory began slipping away, this quiet moment with Ben became an anchor that held firm.
Sometimes the smallest wishes create the biggest comfort.
