Cat Missing 4 Months Reunited After Social Media Spot

After disappearing from his Duncan home in December, Wheeler the tabby cat showed up 60 miles away in Saanich, proving that lost doesn't have to mean gone forever.

The Capital Regional District Animal Shelter posted a photo of the stray tabby on April 27th, hoping someone would recognize him. Staff could see a partially readable tattoo but had no way to contact an owner.

The post worked. Wheeler's family saw the photo and immediately recognized their cat, missing since December 12th.

Animal Shelter Supervisor Karen O'Brien and Animal Control Officer Brendan Dyck didn't wait for regular business hours. They met Wheeler's family after their shift ended to make the reunion happen as quickly as possible.

Wheeler's journey raises a gentle mystery. How does a house cat travel 60 miles in four months? Animal Control Officer Mike Kelly joked that Wheeler probably hitched a ride in someone's car, which could explain the impressive distance.

Whatever his travel method, Wheeler's safe return highlights something bigger than one lucky cat. His partially readable tattoo gave shelter staff enough information to keep searching for his family. Without any identification at all, Wheeler might have been adopted out to a new home.

The CRD reminds pet owners that tattoos, microchips, and collar tags create multiple safety nets. If one form of identification fails or becomes unreadable, another might still bring a lost pet home.

Wheeler is now settled back in Duncan with his very grateful family. Four months is a long time to wonder and worry, but persistence and preparation paid off.
