CD Sales Surge 46% as Physical Media Makes Comeback

Remember CDs? They're not just surviving in your parents' garage anymore.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, CD sales exploded in the first half of 2026. Nearly 17.5 million CDs flew off shelves between January and June, up from just 12 million during the same period last year.

That's a stunning 46% jump in units and 59% in dollars, reaching $171 million. What makes this comeback even more remarkable is that CD sales actually dropped 22% from 2024 to 2025.

Gen Z and millennials are leading the charge, treating CDs as collectibles rather than just music players. Research firm Luminate found that special editions from K-Pop acts like BTS fueled much of the growth. Only about half of buyers actually own a CD player, but that hasn't stopped them from purchasing.

Vinyl records are riding the same wave of nostalgia and appreciation for physical media. Sales climbed 21% to 26.5 million units in the first half of 2026. Even cassettes, DVD-Audio, and other "retro" formats surged more than 73% to 1.6 million units.

The Bright Side

This physical media revival doesn't mean people are abandoning their playlists. Streaming revenue actually grew by nearly 5% to $4.9 billion during the same period, dwarfing all physical sales combined.

The numbers tell a heartening story about choice and value. Young people aren't choosing between old and new technology. They're embracing both, finding room in their lives for the tactile joy of owning music alongside the convenience of streaming.

Artists benefit too, earning higher per-unit revenue from physical sales compared to streaming pennies. Collectors get something tangible to cherish, and the music industry gains another revenue stream in an evolving landscape.

In a world that often feels too digital and disposable, there's something deeply satisfying about holding an album in your hands again.
