Central African Republic Gets Largest Solar Project Ever

The Central African Republic just flipped the switch on a solar energy project that changes everything for hundreds of thousands of families who've lived without reliable electricity.

The Sakaï solar farm, located southwest of capital city Bangui, spans 50 megawatts of solar power paired with battery storage. UAE-based developer Global South Utilities broke ground just last August, making the lightning-fast construction even more impressive.

This isn't just another solar project. It's the largest infrastructure build in the entire nation's history, increasing the country's total electricity generation capacity by more than 60% in one shot.

The numbers tell an incredible story: over 80,000 solar panels and 156 inverters now connect to the Central African Energy Network. That means power flowing to more than 300,000 households across the region.

The rollout starts with 15 megawatts reaching neighborhoods in Bangui's third and ninth districts immediately. By December next year, the project expands to serve other districts across the capital.

The Ripple Effect

When the lights come on, everything changes. Hospitals can refrigerate vaccines and run equipment around the clock. Students can study after dark. Small businesses can extend their hours and grow.

Interim Minister for Energy Rufin Benam Beltoungou celebrated how this foundation unlocks opportunities across healthcare, education, and public services. Global South Utilities points to the bigger picture: reliable electricity attracts investment, helps industries expand, and creates jobs communities desperately need.

The timing couldn't be better for African solar growth. The Africa Solar Industry Association now tracks over 92 megawatts of operational solar projects across the Central African Republic, showing momentum that's only building.
