Chad President Pardons Jailed Opposition Leader Masra

Nine political prisoners in Chad are returning to their families tonight after President Mahamat Idriss Déby pardoned his jailed rivals, including former Prime Minister Succès Masra.

Masra, 42, had been serving a 20-year sentence after convictions for hate speech and inciting violence that Human Rights Watch labeled politically motivated. The economist and fierce presidential critic had become one of Chad's most prominent opposition voices before his arrest in May 2025.

Eight other opposition leaders from the Political Actors' Consultation Group also received pardons. They had been sentenced to eight years after organizing a demonstration the government banned.

The presidential decree grants "full remission of custodial sentences," allowing all nine to leave prison immediately. While critics note the pardons preserve criminal records and make recipients ineligible for future elections, supporters see the gesture as progress.

The Bright Side

This development marks a potential turning point for dialogue in a country where political tensions have run high. Ndolembai Sade Njesada, vice president of Masra's Transformers party, expressed hope to "sit down around a table to move peace forward."

President Déby's ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement welcomed the decision as "beneficial," acknowledging the importance of reuniting political leaders with their families. The move comes after years of strained relations between the government and opposition groups.

Masra enjoys wide popularity among Chad's southern communities, who have felt marginalized by the government in N'Djamena. His return to public life could create opportunities for broader representation in national conversations.

The pardon follows a complex political history between Masra and Déby. The two actually worked together briefly when Masra returned from exile, signed a reconciliation deal, and served as prime minister before the 2024 presidential election.

While opposition spokesman Hissein Abdoulaye criticized the cycle of "arbitrarily arresting political leaders" only to pardon them later, the immediate result brings nine people home. For their families and supporters, that reunion represents real progress after months of separation and uncertainty.
