Chandigarh Gaushalas Now Supply Milk to City Orphanages

The children in Chandigarh's orphanages are getting fresh milk every day, thanks to cattle shelters finally putting their resources to work for those who need it most.

Mayor Saurabh Joshi announced the milk donation program during his first field inspection Thursday, visiting two gaushalas (cattle shelters) and a cattle pond in the Industrial Area. Starting Friday, milk produced at Municipal Corporation facilities began flowing to orphanages across the city.

The move transforms what were simply animal shelters into community resources serving vulnerable children. Accompanied by the Municipal Commissioner and senior officials, Joshi toured the Raipur Kalan and Industrial Area Phase I facilities to assess everything from cattle sheds to water supply and fodder availability.

Beyond the milk program, the mayor ordered concrete improvements to animal welfare. He directed the engineering team to convert the existing animal incinerator into an eco-friendly biogas system that's both cost-effective and better for the environment.

The Ripple Effect

This initiative shows how rethinking existing resources can multiply benefits across a community. The same facilities caring for stray and abandoned cattle now provide nutrition to children without families.

The inspection revealed opportunities for broader improvements. Joshi emphasized that gaushalas aren't just shelters but reflect the city's responsibility toward humane care, calling for better hygiene, nutrition, and infrastructure on a clear timeline.

Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar committed to upgrading gaushala infrastructure based on the inspection findings. Officials will now prepare a detailed action plan covering structural repairs, cleanliness, efficient fodder management, and stronger monitoring systems.

The mayor stressed that regular inspections and coordinated efforts will ensure uniform standards across all Corporation-operated gaushalas. His priority is making these improvements happen quickly, not just planning them.

For the orphanages, the change is immediate and practical. Fresh milk arrives daily from a reliable local source, reducing costs and ensuring quality nutrition for growing children.
