ChargePoint's 600kW Charger Fits Where Others Can't

Imagine pulling into a cramped downtown charging station and getting the same superfast charge you'd find at a highway rest stop.

ChargePoint just made that possible. The company unveiled its Express Solo charger, delivering 600 kilowatts of power while taking up 40% less space than competing fast chargers. That's enough juice to add serious range in the time it takes to grab coffee, assuming your EV can handle it.

The real innovation isn't just speed. It's flexibility. The single cabinet can charge two vehicles simultaneously, or expand to serve four with an additional dispenser. When multiple cars plug in, the system smartly divides power based on what each vehicle needs, maxing out at 600 kW per port.

Space matters more than you might think. Urban charging stations often fail because there's simply no room for bulky equipment between fuel pumps and store entrances. ChargePoint designed Express Solo specifically for these tight spots, opening up thousands of potential locations that were previously off limits.

The charger works with both major plug types through ChargePoint's Omni Port system, so drivers never have to worry about compatibility. It also connects directly to battery storage and solar panels, which helps reduce strain on local power grids and cuts operating costs for station owners.

ChargePoint developed the new platform with Eaton, a power management company, creating what they call Express Grid. The system treats charging infrastructure as something that can grow over time rather than a fixed installation. Sites can start small and add capacity as demand increases, without expensive redesigns.

The Ripple Effect

This shift toward compact, powerful chargers could transform urban charging from an afterthought into a viable business. Station owners earn more when they can serve more vehicles per hour, and shoppers benefit from faster turnarounds at convenient locations. As more cities push to phase out gas vehicles, solutions that work in existing real estate become critical.

The technology also opens doors internationally. Express Solo marks ChargePoint's first DC fast charger designed for both North American and European markets, potentially accelerating charging infrastructure worldwide.

Here's the reality check: very few electric vehicles today can accept 600 kW. Most top out around 250-350 kW. But that's changing. Automakers are already developing next-generation EVs with higher charging capabilities, and this infrastructure will be ready when those vehicles hit the road.

The bigger win is making fast charging accessible in places it never worked before, turning everyday errands into charging opportunities without the detour to distant highway stations.
