OpenAI announced Thursday a new feature called Trusted Contact that lets adult users designate a friend or family member as their emergency contact. If conversations turn toward self-harm, the system encourages the user to reach out while also sending an automated alert to their chosen person.

The alert arrives by text, email, or app notification. It keeps things private by not sharing conversation details, simply encouraging the contact to check in with their loved one.

The company reviews every safety notification with a human team member, aiming to respond within an hour. If the situation seems serious, that's when the trusted contact receives an alert.

This safety feature builds on protections OpenAI introduced last September for teen accounts. Those tools give parents similar oversight and notifications when their child might face a serious risk.

ChatGPT has included crisis resources for a while now, automatically suggesting professional health services when conversations mention self-harm. The Trusted Contact option adds a personal layer to that support system.
