Chelan Middle School Ranks Top 10% in Washington for Growth

The school earned prestigious recognition from the Washington State Board of Education for outstanding progress in both closing achievement gaps and academic growth. Out of hundreds of schools across Washington, only 16% received this honor in 2026, making Chelan Middle School part of an elite group.

The numbers tell an inspiring story. Students at Chelan Middle School ranked in the top 10% statewide for growth in both English and math. Low-income students saw top 10% gains in math proficiency and reading growth, proving that zip code doesn't determine destiny.

Principal Terry Sanders credits a simple but powerful approach: high expectations paired with high levels of support. "We don't set goals in August and hope they pay off in June," Sanders explained. Teachers built systems to check in on every student's progress throughout the year, catching struggles early and celebrating wins along the way.

The school was previously identified for needing targeted support in 2024. Just one year later, they've turned things around completely. That kind of rapid improvement doesn't happen by accident—it takes dedicated teachers, engaged families, and students willing to put in the work.

Math teacher Mindy Christopherson and her colleagues created an environment where students feel connected and challenged at the same time. They focused on making sure kids actually understand concepts, not just memorize formulas. The approach worked across different student groups, with gains showing up for all students, white students, and low-income students in multiple subjects.

Superintendent Brad Wilson pointed out what makes this recognition especially meaningful. "This reflects meaningful gains across student groups, which directly aligns with our mission to ensure academic, social, and emotional success for every student," he said.

This win extends far beyond test scores. When a school figures out how to help every student succeed, it transforms an entire community's belief about what's possible. Families who worried their kids might fall through the cracks now see a system designed to catch them.

The achievement also sends a message to other schools struggling with similar challenges. Chelan Middle School started 2024 needing extra support and ended 2026 as a state leader. That journey offers a roadmap: focus on relationships, create support systems, check progress frequently, and never lower expectations.

Lake Chelan School District serves nearly 1,300 students with a 97% graduation rate. Now their middle school stands as proof that the right approach can help every student thrive, regardless of background or income level.
