Chennai Startup Turns Glass Waste Into Factory-Grade Material

Glass can be recycled forever without losing quality, but in India, most used bottles and jars end up mixed, dirty, and impossible to trace back to their source.

Reneonix, founded in Chennai in 2023, built a system that changes that. The startup collects used glass, sorts it with AI technology, tracks every batch, and processes it into specification-grade raw material that factories can actually use.

The difference matters now more than ever. Brands across India face new recycled content targets and extended producer responsibility rules. They need to prove not just that glass was collected, but that it was properly processed and ready to become new products again.

Four founders—Iwan Richard, Karthik Sankar, Varun Pandithurai, and Mohammad Mohiyeddin—started the company to build what they call Recycling Infrastructure as a Service. Instead of just selling recycled glass, they handle the entire chain: collection, sorting, processing, logistics, and the paperwork that proves compliance.

Their technical edge comes from three innovations. First, AI-powered sorting separates incoming glass by type and quality. Second, a tracking framework follows material at the unit and batch level. Third, material science processes convert post-consumer waste into factory-grade raw material that meets manufacturer specifications.

The company just raised 1.7 crore rupees in pre-seed funding led by Inflection Point Ventures in February 2026. Support also came from the Department of Science and Technology, NSRCEL at IIM Bangalore, SustainTN, and ITEL Foundation, plus angel investors and grants.

Reneonix is still pre-revenue, focused on moving from prototypes to commercial units. They're investing heavily in hardware and material science research, running pilot deployments to test their systems.

The operating model is designed to scale city by city. Rather than building one massive plant, they're creating standard procedures that work through local material recovery and logistics partnerships in each location.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond glass, Reneonix plans to tackle other hard-to-recycle materials. Their tracking and sorting infrastructure could help solve similar problems across India's circular economy, turning informal waste chains into measurable, compliant systems that brands can trust.

India generates massive amounts of glass waste, but without proper infrastructure, most of it never becomes truly circular. By proving both the technology and the business model work, Reneonix is building a template other cities and materials can follow.
